What ISO 45003 is
ISO 45003, Psychological health and safety at work, was published in 2021. It gives guidance on managing psychosocial risks within an occupational health and safety management system, and is designed to be used alongside ISO 45001.
It is guidance rather than a certifiable requirement. It helps an organisation that already manages physical safety extend the same discipline to psychological health.
Three groups of psychosocial hazards
- How work is organised
- Roles, workload, pace, hours, control over the work, change, and job security.
- Social factors at work
- Relationships, leadership, support, recognition, civility, and bullying, harassment and violence.
- The work environment, equipment and hazardous tasks
- Conditions and tasks that carry psychological risk, including exposure to traumatic events.
What it asks an organisation to do
Like ISO 45001, it follows Plan, Do, Check, Act. Identify psychosocial hazards, assess the risk, eliminate or control it, support workers who are affected, monitor how the controls are working, and improve. Leadership commitment and worker participation run through all of it.
Our ISO 45003 courses
Every NUIRA Safety Training course comes in an ISO 45003 edition: Workplace Psychological Health and Safety and Resonance for workers, one day each, and Leading Psychological Safety for leaders, over three days. Each can be general or tailored to a frontline service, in house or virtual.
The courses are built on the guidance and taught in our own words.
