What CSA Z1003 is
CSA Z1003, Psychological health and safety in the workplace, was launched in 2013. It was developed by CSA Group and the Bureau de normalisation du Québec, with the Mental Health Commission of Canada, and is often called the National Standard.
It sets out a systematic approach to developing and sustaining a psychologically healthy and safe workplace, focused on preventing harm and promoting mental health. It is voluntary, and it can be adopted in stages.
The thirteen workplace factors
The standard identifies thirteen workplace factors that affect psychological health and safety:
- Organizational culture
- Psychological and social support
- Clear leadership and expectations
- Civility and respect
- Psychological demands
- Growth and development
- Recognition and reward
- Involvement and influence
- Workload management
- Engagement
- Balance
- Psychological protection
- Protection of physical safety
How the standard works
CSA Z1003 follows the same Plan, Do, Check, Act cycle as other management systems. An organisation commits to psychological health and safety, identifies hazards and assesses risk, sets objectives and puts controls in place, measures how they are working, and reviews and improves.
Training is part of that cycle. Workers need to recognise hazards and know where to get help. Leaders need to understand their role and how to plan implementation.
Our CSA Z1003 courses
Every course comes in a CSA Z1003 edition, general or tailored to a frontline service, and is taught in our own words.
- Workplace Psychological Health and Safety
- One day for workers: psychosocial hazards and their controls, worker rights and responsibilities, the early warning signs, critical events and where to get help. Each participant leaves with a personal plan.
- Leading Psychological Safety
- Three days for supervisors, managers and senior leaders: the standards in depth, the leader's legal and moral role, Plan, Do, Check, Act and implementation planning.
- Resonance
- One day for workers: regulation and stress resilience, with resonance breathing practised in the room.
